"Unconventional Three-Dimensional: Michael Gitlin and Michael Zansky"
2003-09-13 until 2003-11-13
Slought Foundation
Philadelphia, PA, USA United States of America

The exhibition “Unconventional Three-Dimensional” features recent work by New York artists Michael Gitlin and Michael Zansky. The work, which at first glance appears sculptural, nevertheless resists being categorized as either installation or object. As Curator Osvaldo Romberg remarks, both artists create sculptures that involve the spectator without falling into the genre of installation, and without asking for physical participation from the public. Each one, in his own way, pushes forward the idea of originality and reflection on the history of twentieth century sculpture. At the same time, this work denies easy involvement with pop iconography and political agendas, so opportunistically exploited today.

Michael Gitlin's work has been widely exhibited, recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, The Jewish Museum, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg. He contributed work to SkulpturSein, curated by Harald Szeeman and Jurgen Harten (Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf, 1986), and Documenta 6 (Kassel, Germany, 1977).

Michael Zansky's work was recently on view at Exit Art, New York, the Aldrich Museum, Connecticut, and the Norton Museum of Art, Florida. He has also exhibited in New York at White Columns, The Drawing Center, White Box, and Barbara Gladstone Gallery. He is represented by Universal Concepts Unlimited, and will exhibit with Constance Dejong and Tony Oursler at the Rockland Foundation in November 2003.
