Madelyn Jordon Fine Art presents Ted Larsen’s first one-man exhibition in New York entitled "Ted Larsen: Coming East". Larsen, a highly acclaimed, 39 year old Santa-Fe based painter, made his mark working exclusively in chalk based pastels for the past 10 years. His subject, the landscape of the rural Michigan of his youth and the Western trees, plains and rivers of adulthood, blend impressionistic and abstract expressionistic techniques. The result is a potent beauty, intense in color, mystical yet honest, truthful renderings of the land.
However, Larsen, a risk-taker in his professional and personal life, has "pushed the envelope" in the past year by adding two new bodies of work. Experimenting with 22-gauge steel as a medium for his paintings, he is using the material of abandoned car parts and creating pared down, abstracted paintings, which reference the landscape, but in an instinctual, oblique way. Similarly, the artist has augmented his minimalist approach with oils on canvas for the first time. These tall, thin paintings of Aspen trees mimic the monumental tree forms of the West to underscore their inherent physical power and beauty. The juxtaposition of the pastels, canvases and metal paintings will be a focus of the show, and the artist’s virtuosity.
