The Art Collection of the Charles Darwin University will showcase a fine selection of etchings, lithographs and screen prints by some of Australia’s leading Indigenous artists to celebrate a decade of Northern Editions, the University’s printmaking workshop. During the past decade Northern Editions has worked collaboratively with many Indigenous Australian communities and artists to produce outstanding works on paper. The prints produced at Northern Editions are held in the Charles Darwin University Art Collection, comprising around 1,000 prints and forming one of the most significant collections of Indigenous prints in the world.
Artists represented in a decade of prints include Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Prince of Wales, Dorothy Napangardi, Johnny Bulunbulun, Rusty Peters, Peggy Napangardi Jones, Tommy Bung Bung, Helicopter Joe Tjungurrayi, Paddy Japaljarri Stewart, and Lily Kngwarreye.
Curated by Julie Milton, the University’s Art Collection Coordinator, the prints selected provide an exemplary view into the diverse media, styles and subjects from many Indigenous communities throughout Northern and Central Australia. Spanning the full ten-year period, with work from Ernabella (1993) to the Tiwi Islands (2002), this important survey exhibition demonstrates the formidable vision, skill and integrity of both artists and printers.
