"Biennial for Contemporary Art Takes Place with Ute Meta Bauer as Artistic Director"
2004-02-14 until 2004-04-17
3rd Berlin Biennale
Berlin, ,
DE Germany
From February 14th to April 18th the 3rd berlin biennial for
contemporary art takes place with Ute Meta Bauer as artistic director. On January 9th 2004 Ute Meta Bauer introduced the 50 artistic
contributions of this year’s berlin biennial that will be realised at
the two venues KW Institute for Contemporary Art and the
Martin-Gropius-Bau as well as the film programme which includes 30
cinematic works which will be shown at the movie theater Arsenal Kino.
A broad, international spectrum of visual art, urban, cinematic,
performative and sonic stagings stands in dialogue with local
discourses. The 50 invited contributions will be connected with so
called ‘hubs’. This term is used for the distribution system of a
digital network or for an airport used as a centre for plane travel. In
the present exhibition it refers to five spaces that are designed
especially for the 3rd berlin biennial by cultural producers, the
majority of whom live in Berlin, and that function as thematic anchors
distributed across the three sites of the 3rd berlin biennial:
MIGRATION, URBAN CONDITIONS, SONIC SCAPES, FASHIONS AND SCENES and OTHER
CINEMAS. The disparate formats of mediation make the 3rd berlin biennial
a transitory space of interlocking communication processes.
The founding of the berlin biennial for contemporary art in 1998
institutionalized an international biennial unique to Germany. The
heterogeneity of Berlin which derives from the myth of its past, from
the alternative, subcultural and critical practice of the 1980s and
early 1990s as well as from politically and economically motivated
redefinitions and shifts caused by its role as the ‘New Capital’‚ is the
reference point for the 3rd berlin biennial.
During the course of the 3rd berlin biennial there will be weekly radio
programmes in collaboration with reboot.fm, discussions, readings and
kooperative events with other cultural institutions in Berlin. The 3rd
berlin biennial will conclude with a three-day Performance Jam from
April 16th to April 18th 2004 at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art.
