"Call for Artists: Contest for Art Works in Glass 2004"

The Glass Museum and the National Council for Culture and Arts, CONACULTA, call together to the 1st CONTEST FOR ART WORKS IN GLASS, with the objective of promoting glass as an artistic element and to enhance the growing production of young artists. All the Artists who are under 32 years, Mexican, residents or non-residents in the area and foreign artists with a minimum residency in Mexico of 5 years will be able to compete in the Category for New Propositions. All the Mexican and/or Latin-American artists who have participated in an individual exhibition or two collective exhibitions will be able to compete in the Category for Contemporary Art in Glass.

Participation will only be in one of the categories.

Only the works created during 2002 will be accepted, which have not been granted awards in previous contests. These works may be produced with any kind of format and technique where glass is used (painting, sculpture, vitrographics, stained-glass, installation, etc.) as well as the possible blends and interactions. The subject and use of materials in the works are totally free; nevertheless, glass must be used in at least 30-40% of the total piece.

The works may be individual or collective. The author, or authors must explain in writing (1 page) and through a clearly detailed drawing (3 pages maximum) the general concept and specific requirements for mounting of each piece. There will be up to two works accepted per artist, without any limitation in the elements within each piece, although the physical dimensions must not exceed 2.5 meters in height, 2.5 meters in width (in the case of bi-dimensional works) and 2 square meters by 2.5 meters in height (in the case of tri-dimensional works).

The Glass Museum can make available a projector, a monitor, a television or a slide projector to those artists whose works require the installation of such devices. In the case of the technical elements, production and mounting, the artists must absorb the costs and production.

Each work must specify its appraisal, in order to have it insured during its stay in the Museum. The Glass Museum has the right to reject such value if considered unreasonable. The artist must cover transportation insurance.

The transportation cost shall be covered and under the participants risk, the Glass Museum shall not be accountable for damage suffered during transportation of the piece.

The images and description of the piece shall be sent to the Glass Museum address or to the International Project Department e-mail in the Museum: museoconcurso@vitro.com

Jury, Awards and Exhibition:

The Jury in the event shall be integrated by five prestigious academics, critics and/or curators, directly involved in the contemporary plastic arts, whose names shall be given when appropriate.

There will be a Grand Prize in the event awarded for each of the categories and there will be a recognition given and the scholarships corresponding to the second and third position. Likewise, there will be Honorary Awards given when considered convenient, all of which will be recorded in the Official Record of Proceedings of the Jury the day when the awards are granted. The decision of the Jury shall be unappealable.

Collective Participation: in case more than one person are considered winners, the Award will be divided into equal parts among the participants.

First Prize, Category New Propositions: $ 100, 000.00 (amount in Mex. Cy.)
Second Prize: Scholarship for 2 Workshops in Art Works in Glass
Third Prize: Scholarship for 1 Workshop in Art Works in Glass
Honorary Awards

First Prize, Category Contemporary Art in Glass: $100,000.00 (amount in Mex. Cy.) * Paid in U.S. Dollars according to the exchange rate on the delivery date.
Second Prize: Scholarship for 2 Workshops in Art Works in Glass
Third Prize: Scholarship for 1 Workshop in Art Works in Glass
Honorary Awards
* The Prize is tax free

The Prizes and Awards will receive a "Recognition Diploma" as well as a "Participation Certificate" to the remaining participants. The winning pieces as well as the artists selected for the exhibition in the contest shall be dully notified via e-mail or other means.

There will be an exhibition at the Glass Museum that will be opened in the month of June in which the Winner Pieces, the Honorary Awards and other selected works for the exhibition will be included.

The works corresponding to the Winner pieces shall become part of the Permanent Collection at the Glass Museum where they will be subject to the Technical Committee at the Museum, following in these cases the Museum policies.

The Museum reserves the right of using the totality or fragments of images of the works submitted to the contest for the effective communication of the event.

The participation in this contest implies the acceptance of all the aforementioned rules. Employees from Grupo Vitro are excluded from participating in the contest.

Reception of the Work:

During the first stage, the aspirants shall send a proposal with the following information. The proposals sent with incomplete information shall not be considered for the contest:

ARTIST: Resumé (two pages maximum): with names and last name of the author or authors, year of birth (copy of passport or official ID included), nationality and residence, telephone or fax number, e-mail and home address.

WORK: 4 PICTURES - 4x3" and 4 slides - 35 mm. As well as the name, year when it was created and a brief reference of the content (1 page maximum), as well as the techniques and materials used, the proposal for mounting and other technical data that the author considers pertinent.

It is important to specify the category in which you want to participate.

RECEPTION OF PROPOSAL: From March 15 thru April 23, 2004.

o Proposals sent after the deadline shall not be accepted (April 23, 2004). The dates recorded in the post office or courier service seal will be considered. o The registration materials shall not be returned.

The participants who are selected to participate in the sample and who have been dully notified shall send their work to the Museum facilities.

RECEPTION OF THE WORK: From May 10 thru 29, 2004.

The works selected for the sample shall be collected at the Glass Museum after the exhibition period; that is, from August 19 thru September 19, 2004. After this day, the Glass Museum shall not be accountable for the work.
