The Rebecca Ibel Gallery presents two exhibitions in the High Street gallery during Juen and July. Yek: Cabriolet (from Vegas to Columbus)is an exhibition of new abstract paintings on horizontal, irregularly shaped
canvas, a departure from the previous series of square warped panels. Melissa McGill: The Othersiders brings us an exhibition of the New York based artist, featuring new photographs and sculpture.
Yek's
images remain abstract, equally inspired by the West Coast landscape as
perhaps experienced on a road trip and contemporary artists such as Elsworth
Kelly. His style is as smooth and seductive as ever.
Originally from Singapore, Yek studied in Australia before moving to the US.
He received his BFA in Austin, Texas, and studied with Dave Hickey at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas to receive his MFA . The artist has been
exhibiting with the gallery since 1997.
Melissa McGill in this series is interested in what she calls ‘The Othersiders’. The photographs,
taken in black and white, at first glance appear to be normal shots of an
urban street, until one notices that the emphasis is on the shadows and the
people themselves have been removed. The sculpture similarly reveals the
‘other’ side of objects. Taken from molds of the insides of figurines, the
forms take on their own life.
Originally from Rhode Island, McGill received her Bachelor of Fine Art
degree at the Rhode Island School of Design.
