Regina Gimenez (Barcelona, 1966), exhibits her latest work on paper and canvas consisting of a selection of paintings on paper and canvas that are presented in formats ranging from intimate to monumental. In this work, Gimenez continues exploring the development of an iconography based on the graphic design and marketing techniques of a post-industrial world. The paintings of Regina Gimenez evoke the graphic and industrial design of Germany and Russia from the years between the wars, using elements of the International Style to create abstract compositions that are almost like landscapes. With backgrounds covered in rich textures and gestural brushwork, the principal elements are collages applied to the painterly and emotive canvas, giving the compositions their characteristic relief.
They are urban scenes, almost utopian, that represent a more innocent world, where the power of consumerism and industrialization is seen with benevolent eyes.
The work, however, does not fall back on a post-modern nostalgia, but instead commits the viewer to enter the architectural space that is created by the wide bands of colour and the dense texture that inform the work while compelling us to reflect upon the powerful irony that inspires these paintings.
Regina Giménez has enjoyed an ample representation, with one-person gallery exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, France and Belgium. She is the winner of several prestigious prizes and since 1997 has exhibited yearly at the Madrid International Art Fair, ARCO.
