As a part of Thurber House’s 20th anniversary, the Thurber Center Gallery is showcasing work from its first ten years, including art by Aminah Robinson, Marc Simont and Mary Azarian, in Columbus Collects: A Thurber Center Gallery Retrospective. Since 1993, the Thurber Center Gallery has presented 28 exhibits of book-related art by world-renowned artists, illustrators and cartoonists. In addition to Robinson, Simont and Azarian, the gallery has featured work by Academy Award winners, Pulitzer Prize winners and Caldecott Medal winners such as Edward Gorey, Jules Feiffer, Steven Kellogg, C.F. Payne and Maira Kalman. All of the art featured in Columbus Collects is from the personal collections of Columbus residents who purchased the art during the original Thurber Center Gallery shows.
Thurber House — a literary center, bookstore and museum located in the former home of author, humorist, and New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber — opened its doors to the public in 1984. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Thurber House’s programs also include author readings, writing classes for children, celebrations of Thurber’s life and special events for adults and children. The Thurber Center Gallery is located next door to Thurber House in the Thurber Center, 91 Jefferson Ave., a classroom and rental facility run by Thurber House.
