The Peoria Art Guild will host two exhibits, Any Given Moment by Ann Coulter and Time Works by Fred Jones, opened August 20 and runns through September 22, 2004. Both Ann Coulter and Fred Jones are taking a more in-depth look at our natural surroundings. Coulter says her pastel drawings deal “with a personal investigation and interpretation of the Illinois Landscape” and that she is “trying to capture the essence of a specific place in a potent and clarified way.” It is important for her “to address not only how a place looks, but also how it feels.”
Jones is also trying to capture a moment with his painting and digital images, however he is more interested nature’s relationship to time. This focus stems from his retirement in 2002 and he says that he is now “more conscious of the relationship between our experience of time and the changes that take place in the natural environment.” According to author and WIU professor, John Hallwas, Jones realizes that “humans have gradually lost the profound sense of meaningfulness that once characterized their experience of the natural world” and that Jones’ “studies of temporality remind us that although we have chosen to acknowledge only the barren, meaningless pulsations of the clock, nature has a million varieties of time, embodied in organisms and ecosystems that affirm the mysterious unity of always and now.”
The Peoria Art Guild, celebrating 125 years of serving the community and artists, is the largest, nonprofit, community art center in downstate Illinois dedicated to contemporary art. The Peoria Art Guild promotes education and the appreciation of visual arts by providing the community with art exhibits, art classes, original artwork for purchase or rent, and other special events such as the Fine Art Fair. Programs are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
