"Die Familie Schneider in London"
2004-10-01 until 2004-11-01
From October 2004, Die Familie Schneider will take up residence in neighbouring identical houses in Londonís East End. German artist Gregor Schneider is internationally renowned for his unnerving presentation of normality. Schneiderís medium is the room ó kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom ó and cellar. In his work the domestic environment becomes the site of an unrelenting existential confrontation. Up until now, Schneider has mainly focused on Dead House ur, the 20-year ongoing transformation of his parentsí former home in Rheydt, Germany.
Dead House ur was recently reconstructed in the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2001 when Schneider was awarded the Golden Lion for Sculpture.
For his first major project in the UK, Die Familie Schneider renews Schneiderís obsession with repression, reproduction and repetition in a very ordinary London street.
Visitors will be admitted by prior arrangement one at a time to Die Familie Schneider.
