"It Went Dark and I Saw"
2004-11-03 until 2004-11-15

It went dark and I saw is a new photographic
exhibition by the collective of emerging international
photographers, photodebut. Independently, group
members have exhibited throughout the world. As a
collective, they share a continuing desire to produce
critically engaged work within a variety of contexts.
Their forthcoming project confronts darkness.
Photography is based on light and cannot depict
darkness. In the photographic medium, dark areas
imply that nothing is reflected into the camera lens
and that the photographic surface does not receive
visual information. Darkness can thereby be
translated photographically into the unknown.
Darkness elicits a range of responses. The
collaboration promises an exciting array of work,
from dark voyeuristic studies to images depicting
light childhood fantasy and play.
"The photodebut concept is totally refreshing. An innovative
approach nurturing, inspiring and showcasing new talent”
RIKKI KEENE PICTURE EDITOR, ARENA MAGAZINE
"photodebut is an energetic and eclectic mix of people, ideas and
styles. It shows initiative and is an important creative force in the
wide and varied field of photography today”
SUSAN BRIGHT CURATOR AND LECTURER V&A, TATE, NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
"photodebut is a response to both a gaping hole in the current
advice landscape and the need for peer-group networking and
critical feedback opportunities”
