Illuminance: A national competitive exhibition featuring photographic work from across the nation. The Fine Arts program of the Buddy Holly Center is committed to the promotion of contemporary visual arts and educational programs. In its seventeenth year we are proud to present Illuminance at the Buddy Holly Center.

Keith Carter is an internationally recognized photographer and educator. Born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1948, he holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University Beaumont, Texas. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey Grants and the Lange-Taylor Prize from The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Mr. Carter’s works are included in numerous permanent collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the George Eastman House; the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston; and the Wittliff Collection of Southwestern and Mexican Photography at Southwest Texas State University.

This competition is open to all artists nationwide using photographic processes as their media. Please do not submit any work that has been shown in a previous Illuminance exhibition.

Awards - Juror awards: $1500. Purchase awards: $1000.

The Buddy Holly Center will publish a catalogue, with each selected artist receiving one copy. Catalogues will be distributed to museum curators and gallery directors nationwide.

Submit one slide for two-dimensional work and two slides for each three-dimensional work. Slide mounts must be marked with 1) artist's name; 2) dimensions of the final image; 3) top of image; 4.) title of work. A self-addressed stamped envelope must be included for return of slides. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for return of slides. Slides of accepted entries will be retained for our permanent library. Due to technological challenges 35mm slides are the only presentation excepted for juroring.

Entry Fees - One to three works, $25. Additional works, $3 each. Fees are non-refundable.

Sales - Sale of work is encouraged. The Buddy Holly Center retains 30% commission.

The Buddy Holly Center retains the right to reproduce artwork for publicity purposes. Submission of an entry to this exhibition shall indicate an agreement on the part of the artist to these conditions.

Accepted work shall be sent suitable for installation, packed in sturdy, reusable containers (no Styrofoam peanuts, please).
