And so the journey begins...
The South Project is very pleased to announce its first round of
residency opportunities across the southern hemisphere.
In July 2004 representatives of over fourteen different countries
gathered together in Melbourne to discuss how they might work together,
this gathering was the focal point of South 1: The Gathering. Despite
great differences of language, colour, culture, economics and history,
one element brought everyone together - the condition of living in the
south. What is normally a condition of isolation, has now become an
opportunity for collaboration.
In 2005 the South Project is focused on developing residencies and
collaborative exchange opportunities for the extensive network of
artists and cultural workers that has developed since the initiation of
this project. In this sense the South Project is working primarily as a
vehicle for artists to explore ways of linking different countries of
the south, and furthering a dialogue on progressive art production away
from the epicentres of the art world. Artistic creation is very much
dependent on experience of cultural difference. To this end, the
residency program being developed is an important foundation of the
South Project in enabling artists to spend time in participating
countries.
The South Project residencies are open to arts and crafts practitioners
from through out the southern hemisphere. Each residency has its own set
of criteria and application deadline, details for which are included in
the residency outlines on our website:
www.southproject.org/residencies.htm.
