The Dublin Arts Council Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Cincinnati-based artist Lisa Britton. Reverence: Photographs from Japan will be on view February 23 – March 31, 2005 as part of Dublin Arts Council’s annual celebration of Japanese arts and culture. This beautiful collection of photographs deftly captures the quality of reverence that permeates the Japanese landscape and culture. Photographer Lisa Britton’s first experience with this serene spirituality came in 1988, when she traveled to Japan to study traditional art forms as part of her undergraduate work. Her time spent in Japan profoundly affected not only her artistic sensibilities, but also her spiritual sensibilities.
The artist returned to Japan in 2001, living for eight months in the rural town of Aizu Wakamatsu in the mountains of northern Japan. Once again, the Japanese way of imbuing the simplest acts with a quality of reverence, and a worshipful way of communing with nature deeply affected Britton, and she sought to capture this essence in her photography.
Lisa Britton has worked as a fine art photographer for 24 years, studying at the New England School of Photography, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of Cincinnati, where she earned her M.A. in photography. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, from East Coast to West and in Korea, Japan and France. She currently teaches at Sinclair Community College and the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
