"Acting Out: Invented Melodrama in Contemporary Photography"
2005-04-07 until 2005-06-05
University of Iowa Museum of Art
Iowa City, IA, USA United States of America

Familiar psychological themes confront viewers with reflections of real life rooted in emotion, memory and the imagination. This lively display of 32 photographs by 14 artists explores melodrama as an aesthetic system of representation influenced by literature, theatre, film, media stills, and historic photography. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue investigates how subjective interpretations of the codes of melodrama are generated through actual and cognitive collaborations between artists, models, and viewers.

Artists in the exhibition: Tina Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Philip Lorca-diCorcia, Anna Gaskell, Tom Hunter, Simen Johan, Justine Kurland, Laura Letinksy, Sharon Lockhart, Adi Nes, Cindy Sherman, Yinka Shonibare, Janaina Tschape, Jeff Wall. The exhibition is organized by UIMA curator Kathleen A. Edwards.

Acting Out will be exhibited by the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York, Sept. 4 - Dec. 31, 2005.
