"Open Painting: Contemporary Painting, Selected by Recognised Artists, Critics and Art Dealers"

The Open Painting is an exhibition dedicated solely to the medium of painting. Its aim is to embrace a broad range of styles and painted mediums. It is anticipated that it will be a vibrant display of the best of contemporary painting. Painters from all over the country have been encouraged to submit their artworks for selection by some of the UK's leading experts in the art world and it has attracted interest internationally. The exhibition opened to the public on Sunday 24th April at the Royal West of England Academy, in Bristol.
The selection of the exhibition will take place on 3rd April. The selection committee includes the art critic Andrew Lambirth (Spectator magazine), Nicholas Usherwood (arts writer and editor Galleries magazine) artist Maurice Cockrill RA RWA, Camilla Nock RWA and Anita Taylor RWA, and established art dealer Anthony Hepworth.
Derek Balmer, President of the RWA who will be chairing the selection committee said
"The aim of the Open Painting exhibition is to attract, through prize money and our prestigious reputation, a wide and specialised submission that will hopefully reflect the best in contemporary painting. Although there is no telling what the vision of an open exhibition might be, my hope is that it will be eclectic, controversial, honest, pleasurable and of a high standard"
There will be prize money of over £11,000. The Odin Charitable trust have generously supported the exhibition with a prize of £8000, There will be a £2000 Purchase Prize from the RWA and the purchased work will be added to the RWA's growing collection of over 1200 art works. The Lark Trust Award will give a prize of £1000 for the Promotion of Figurative Painting. The RWA Friends association and Mary Fedden RA PPRWA will also be awarding cash prizes and the University of West of England will be offering a place on one of its five day drawing schools "Drawing Quarters"
