2005 World Calligraphy Biennale of Jeollabuk-do

The 2005 World Calligraphy Biennale of Jeollabuk-do will be held at three locations across Seoul - Sori Arts Center of Jeollabuk-do, Jeonbuk Art Museum and Jeonju National Museum from Oct 1 to Oct 31, 2005. The years event is entitled "Festival for Alphabets".
As use of characters has gone down with the coming of the age of an image, this festival, based on Korean paper surviving for one thousand year, provides not only calligraphers of the all generations, from Korea, China, and Japan, but artists, from other areas which are not in Chinese character cultural zone, with a chance of meeting to introduce their works of calligraphy and arts for the alphabets of harmony and interchange.
The Biennale is divided into several shows. One of interest is the Writings & Paintings Show held at the Jeonbuk Art Museum.
Through contacts between calligraphy and paintings, this event is an exhibition of works created in Western style pictures with characters as a material. The curatorial aims of the segment is to promote the spread of calligraphic arts. 28 non-eastern artists will present works.
Among those artists is Laura Castanedo from Mexico. "When you work in different diciplines of art itīs hard to resist the temptation to connect them, I NEED to work with text, visual images, and music - at the same time with the same issue," state Castanedo in her artist statement.
