Artists have always been drawn to cities as the inspiration for and site of their creative actions. City life provides a complex, psychological and social space in which to make art, talk about it, and locate it in various official and alternative scenes. Each major artistic movement has been linked to the particular city where it was born and thrived and one can hardly imagine Impressionism without Paris, Expressionism without Berlin, Abstract Expressionism without New York, and so on.
The emerging and established artists included in Here & There: City Acts explore the nature of cities in a variety of ways. They create walking tours as a means to understand the history of particular neighborhoods; create collaborations that question notions of home and shelter; map the ominous presence of governmental and corporate surveillance cameras; archive what can be found on a casual stroll with a friend; anonymously repair or enhance city structures and move on.
Much of the work in this exhibition is performative in nature, happening not in the isolation of studios, but rather in public. Works are realized and documented through maps, drawings, lists, photographs, and video. Cities that have hosted these efforts include Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Paris, Portland, and Las Vegas.
Artists included in the exhibition are: Amy Carter & Hope Hilton, Didier Courbot, Harrell Fletcher, Bonnie Fortune & Melinda Fries, Dave McKenzie, Red 76, Surveillance Camera Players, Tad Savinar, and
Jerome Unterreiner.
