During the month of November, Hang Art in San Francisco presents and exhibition of paintings by Katherine Valentine entitled "Temperature". With a quick eye and keen observations, Valentine shows us how vision is inseparable from physical and emotional experience. By working with different methods of rendering, she pulls the eye toward more "finished" parts of her figurative paintings while leaving other areas open, creating room for the eye to move freely through broad sections of vivid color.
Katherine Valentine's figurative paintings flicker on the canvas, saturated with evanescent light, subtle movement, and palpable emotion. Her painting process mimics life itself, with its constant negotiation of boundaries, its cycles of dissolution and regeneration.
A new mother of twins, Katherine has taken as her subject the meditative moments of ease that punctuate the chaos of family life. Her recent paintings take a step away from pure representation, toward distilled abstraction. Katherine reworks her compositions constantly, alternately dissolving borders to let the space creep in, and adding more definition to reclaim the figure's presence.
Katherine Valentine received her bachelor's degree in film from UCLA and earned her master's degree in painting at the Academy of Art College. A native of the Bay Area, she has a spent time living abroad in Italy and Costa Rica.
