Bert Green Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and drawings titled "Visions of Heaven and Hell (and Then Some)" by noted artist, author, and film director Clive Barker. His book Visions of Heaven and Hell is the starting point for much of the work in this show, which includes some of the original artwork used in the book, plus paintings created more recently which use the book's themes of the book as a point of departure. Clive Barker's vision focuses on dense nether regions of parallel worlds and on the bodies of the characters who inhabit and colonize these worlds.
Barker has revealed startling metaphors for our inner dreams and fears; as in Plato's Cave, we fear that which we are not accustomed to experiencing. Fear gives way to erotic fantasy as unusual creatures open doors to our education in a new world order.
On Thursday, January 12 there will be a live painting session and photo shoot in the gallery. Clive Barker will paint the nude bodies of 5 men and then photograph the results.
In the Project Windows, Joella March's "The Loves Me Knot" and "War Stories and Waking Dreams" - are part of a neon text series in progress entitled "Between The Lines". The words in March's neon sentences turn on and off, causing wide semantic variations. Swinda Reichelt uses organza and fluorescent light to allow viewers to construct their own narratives. Richard Godfrey's mixed media sculpture is comprised of objects found on Gallery Row. Godfrey celebrates the tradition of the found-object art, and in particular, acknowledges the Bay Area artist Robert Hudson.
