Contemporary Art at Castel del Monte - Puglia
Bari, ,
IT Italy
This 1st stage of a 3-year project in the Castles of Puglia -
"Indian reservation for international artists" entitled INTRAMOENIA/EXTRA ART, the contemporary art exhibition curated by Achille
Bonito Oliva and Giusy Caroppo, opened at Castel del Monte (Andria) on 18th December 2005. This is the first show, part of a three-year project that aims to promote
Pugliaís Castles among which Castel del Monte is the most distinctive.
During the three-year period 2005/2007, Intramoenia/Extra Art will develop
an innovative programme of exhibitions to be held at most of Puglia's
castles, particularly the most remote ones.
The castles involved are those of Taranto, Massafra, Lucera, Manfredonia,
Montesantangelo, Lecce, Otranto, Grottaglie, Brindisi, Oria, Bari, Trani,
Barletta, Sannicandro, Mola di Bari, Monopoli.
After the first event that holds Castel del Monte as its centre, a group
of additional castles will become ìthe seat, a sort of indian reservation
for contemporary artists chosen from a multimedia, multi-cultural,
trans-national perspective. As Scientific Director of Intramoenia Extra
Art, Achille Bonito Oliva points out "this process creates cultural
nomadism. It requires the protagonists of contemporary art to travel
through and reside on site in order to produce their works through
materials and techniques that are adequate to their works. Puglia thus
becomes the theatre of a cultural event in which contemporary art
paradoxically plans its own past while keeping in touch with the history
of those places. Those very places. A grand tour for everybody".
The general curator of the project is Giusy Caroppo who, with Achille
Bonito Oliva, has identified "5 points of view" to which the artistsí work
will converge in the creation of site-specific works:
THE PAST: that is to say, history is intended as the passing of time but
also as 'past history' and 'new history', as well; the unfolding of an
impossible future.
SPACE: as the inseparable relationship between art and architecture,
physical place and geography.
TECHNOLOGY: from art-anorexia as caused by web surfing to exhibited
innovative models.
IDENTITY: as investigated into its anthropological connotation and social
need.
GENIUS LOCI: a powerful record of the linguistic matrix of the
participating artists, expressed both as form and content
The 5 perspectives of the Castel del Monte exhibition are interpreted by
Pedro Cabrita Reis, Sarah CiracÏ, Sislej Xhafa, Bill Viola and Enzo Cucchi
with Francesco Arena, Marc Bauer, Elisabetta Benassi, Carlo Benvenuto,
Domenico Mangano.
The artists' works will be exhibited at Castel del Monte until February
26th; a period during which the castle will hold conferences, meetings,
shows, teaching labs, guided tours. Aimed at a vast, multi-generation
audience, the process thus creates several meeting opportunities towards a
renewed cultural tourism designed to attract a public that is open to the
appreciation of the past as well as to the discovery of contemporary art.
Catalogues and DVD will be available at the end of each exhibition. They
will feature work-in-progress documents (from planning to installation of
the art pieces) the curators' essays, interviews and indications on
cultural, food and wine specialties of the region.
INTRAMOENIA/EXTRA ART is deneloped and produced by 'Eclettica Cultura
dellíArte'. It is promoted by Regione Puglia (Puglia's Regional
Authority), in cooperation with Soprintendenza per i beni architettonici e
per il paesaggio della Puglia (the regional branch of the Fine arts and
architecture Authority) MiBAC (Ministry for Environmental and Cultural
Resources), the Andria Commune, the Bari Province. In addition, the
project is supported buy several other private and public organizations.
