A selection from the multi-part exhibition from the Saatchi Gallery, London showing at Leeds City Art Gallery thanks to sponsorship by law firm Walker Morris. As the only gallery outside London to exhibit these works from the collection of Charles Saatchi, the exhibition will present a rare opportunity for the people of Leeds and beyond to see paintings from this internationally acclaimed and sometimes critically controversial exhibition.
The Triumph of Painting showcases an international line-up of contemporary painters and sets out to show how today’s artists, and audiences, can still be intellectually and emotionally engaged by a form of art – painting – often declared defunct and outmoded in a technological and digital age.
The Saatchi Gallery has always aimed to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unseen young artists or by established international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK.
The audience for exhibitions of contemporary art has increased widely during the last ten years as general awareness and interest in contemporary art has developed in Britain.
