In Filtered,at the Ohio Art League in Columbus, Ohio during the month of October, artists David Murphy and Sharon McJannet create a collaborative body of work dealing with the concept of filters; whether the pieces physically take on the characteristics of an actual filter, or allude to ideas of self-preservation based on the notion of filtering information. The work calls into question ideas of presence and absence, what is passed through our personal and social filters, and what remains.
Using glass, metals, soap, wood and organic materials the artists’ variety of works provide a visual interpretation of the filters we all use to process the world around us. Excerpted from her curatorial statement, McJannet notes, “We watch the nightly news and get flyers about missing persons, finding ourselves frustrated or saddened with what’s going on in the world around us. However, after it has finished and the pile of flyers has made its way into the trash, we go on about our business with little of that frustration or sadness staying with us. When one initially stops and thinks about this, it seems somehow irresponsible, as if we are hardened to the information. Though, if you spend a little more time reasoning with this idea, it becomes apparent that we must all have built in filters. These filters are there as a defense mechanism to protect us from the tragedies of everyday life.”
The Ohio Art League is a nonprofit membership-based organization, dedicated to the
presentation and support of Ohio artists. The gallery is located at 954 N. High Street
in Columbus’ Short North.
