William J.S. Boyle, Chief Executive Officer of Harbourfront Centre announced that the unique programme to commission new Canadian art works of a cross-disciplinary nature is entering its second cycle. Established in 2004 as part of Harbourfront Centre‚s 30th anniversary celebrations, the Fresh Ground new works programme is a catalyst in the creation of new artistic works across Canada and fosters collaborations among different art forms, disciplines and generations.
In the first year of the award programme, Harbourfront Centre received 159 submissions from all parts of the country from which 5 collaborations were awarded $20,000 each. Submissions included theatre, opera, dance, visual art, craft and science proposals. "The enthusiastic response and creative range of the submissions from artists to the 2004 call underlines the importance of initiatives that support Canadian creativity and cultural invention," commented William Boyle. "Harbourfront Centre is proud to directly assist in the creation of new interdisciplinary work through the Fresh Ground new works programme."
To qualify for one of up to five commissions, each with a monetary award up to a maximum of $20,000, applicants must be a professional artist, a Canadian or landed immigrant, and must fulfill the criteria of creating a new, collaborative work which incorporates more than one discipline or field. The work must be original, never before presented or performed, and ready for presentation or installation at Harbourfront Centre in the 2007-2008 season.
Fresh Ground new works is made possible by the generosity of several individual donors who have actively assisted in the creation of new Canadian art works: Peter Allen, Robert Canning and Anne Marie Knudsen, Lionel Conacher and Joan Dea, James D. and Margaret Fleck, Sonja and Michael Koerner, Judy and Wil Matthews, George E. Myhal, Sandra and Jim Pitblado, Gretchen and Donald Ross, Anonymous, and a grant from Imperial Tobacco Canada Arts Fund.
The deadline for Fresh Ground new works submissions is Friday, December 1, 2006. Full criteria for qualification and instructions for applicants can be found at the Harbourfront Centre website, www.harbourfrontcentre.com/callforsubmissions, or by 416 952-3565.
