Irvine Contemporary is pleased to present two concurrent exhibitions opening Saturday, December 2: The Trophy Room, a solo exhibition of new sculptures by Joshua Levine. The new installation of sculptures for The Trophy Room by nationally acclaimed artist, Joshua Levine, presents a collection of fantasy animals in a “trophy room” of the future. At a time when creating designer animals through genetic engineering is a common practice, Levine presents wonderfully designed sculptures of hybrid “game” animals as trophy fetishes.
As William Gibson, author of Neuromancer and coiner of the term “cyberspace” once remarked, “the future is already here—it’s just not evenly distributed.” Like the cyberpunk fiction writers, Levine performs an imaginative extrapolation of current tendencies already underway in the genetic engineering of animals and in trophy game breeding farms. The art works pose a fascinating question: what possible futures for mutations and hybrid animals are already here in our current sciences and fantasies? Joshua Levine's creatures, individually sculpted with epoxy clay, resin, replica eyes, and acrylic paint, are at once visually arresting, humorous, and open to interpretation.
Irvine gallery artist Joshua Levine, who has participated in many exhibitions and art fairs throughout the US, exhibited most recently with Irvine in the Animalia show in July 2006. The Trophy Room is his first solo exhibition with Irvine. Josh Levine, who has lived and worked for many years in Brooklyn, NY, has recently moved to Los Angeles.
