"Landscape Revisited: Fact and Metaphor"
2007-02-01 until 2007-03-29
City Without Walls - cWOW
Newark, NJ, USA United States of America

Landscape Revisited: Fact and Metaphor, a multi-site and multi-media exhibition curated by Peter Homitzky, has its opening reception on Thursday, February 1, 2007, 6-8pm at City Without Walls (cWOW). Works in the exhibition will be shown in two locations. From February 1 - March 29, 2007 at cWOW, 6 Crawford Street, Newark, NJ and from January 8 ˆ April 27, 2007 at Seton Hall University School of Law, One Newark Center, Newark, NJ . Both venues are free and open to the public. The exhibition treats the landscape as experience rather than mere pictures of places. The artists approach their landscapes as conceptual works that are neither specifically literal nor descriptive.

The exhibition includes over sixty works by the following twenty artists: Hilario Alonso, Lauren Biancardi, Montserrat Daubon, Jose del Solar, Robin Feld, Yunny Han, E. Jan Kounitz, Richard Leon, Louise Lieber, JoAnne Lobotsky, Roberta Melzl, Michael Tyson Murphy, Gail Nicholson, Valerie Phillips, Marne Rizika, Eric Soll, Carlo Vialu, and Charles Wilcoxen. In addition, artist and filmmaker Leah M. Yananton and cinematographer Larry Engel will debut their new collaboration "Landescapes" in cWOW's New Media Project Room.

Eric Soll has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2005. View more of his work at: http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/e/ericsoll/

"Landscape, whether real or imagined, is always site specific," says curator and preeminent New Jersey landscape painter Peter Homitzky. "I looked for artists that have at least one foot planted in their own time, and who are aware of historical precedents and use them not to mimic, but as an aid in developing their personal point of view. Point of view [is] the essential element in creating a personal visual language and process that defines an artist."

City Without Walls (cWOW) is an urban gallery of emerging art that advances the careers of artists while building the audience for contemporary art. Founded in 1975, cWOW is New Jersey's oldest not-for-profit alternative art space. cWOW is a three-time recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence. cWOW is funded in part by the Prudential Foundation, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, NJ State Council on the Arts/Department of State, and JPMorganChase. It is easily accessible by car, mass transit, or at cwow.org.
