MOCA, the Museum of Computer Art, announced the winners of its seventh annual digital art contest. Top prize of $1000 went to Peter Ciccariello for his virtuoso display of manipulated images, "Bird in a Basket." Ciccariello is a well-known name in the digital field, having won a MOCA contest in 2006. He lives in Providence, Rhode Island. The competition, which is called The Donnie2007, received 137 entries from around the world. Eight winners were chosen. Thomas Demuth won Second Prize. Third Prize went to Bjoern Daempfling. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Dieter Bruhns, Vlatko Ceric, Michael Ammel, Susie Holderfield, and Werner Hornung.
MOCA was formed in 1993. MOCA is the main or one of the top digital art sites in US, and the world. (Funny, almost nobody talks of computer art now, as they did when the site was formed. Now the site would likely be called MODA.)
Don Archer, MOCA’s director (and contest namesake), commented on this year’s work: “The sheer variety of images is astonishing. There are very few cliches here. Artists are going their own way, using their own techniques, forging their own idiosyncratic styles. But photo-based art, possibly based on surreal themes, still seems to have the most currency."
Archer calculates that MOCA received entries from about a dozen countries.
Don says: "The Donnie 2000 was the first Donnie. I felt at the time that digital art needed a kind of Academy Award of its own, for the best digital art of the year. Broadway has its Tony, advertising has its Clio, recording has its Grammy, TV has its Emmy, now digital art has its Donnie. It is named after myself, although almost nobody calls me that."
The longevity and $1000 prize speak for themselves.
The images represented a great range of styles. Curious about digital? Stop by MOCA and check the winners of Donnie2007.
