"Call for Artists: Breather - A Design Conference"
2007-08-30 until 2007-08-31
Agnes Scott College
Decatur, GA,
USA United States of America
The first annual edition of Breather: A Design Conference will take place on August 30-31, 2007, in Decatur, Georgia. A full day of events is planned to take place on the Agnes Scott College campus on Thursday, August 30, with additional activities that evening and the morning of August 31st throughout Decatur. Breather will bring together artists, architects, interior designers, graphic designers, landscape architects and other professionals concerned with design and its effects. This multidisciplinary approach to the subject will also attract students from design programs in the area. The unique benefit comes from the interdisciplinary cross-pollination in both the audience and the presenters. Members of the design community are invited to “take a Breather in Decatur,” to be stimulated outside their usual constraints, and to benefit from the ideas and practices of other design disciplines.
A schedule of speakers and panelists will include the following: Lars Spuybroek, the principal of NOX, an art & architecture studio in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and the Ventulett Distinguished Chair of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta; Allan Messer, photographer and designer based in Nashville, Tennessee, who specializes in work for the music business; David Oakey, principal in David Oakey Designs and a leader in global efforts in sustainable or “smart design” through the study of biomimicry; Wade Thompson and Matt Rollins, designers with Iconologic, a design firm with global reach; and artists Amy Landesberg, Joe Peragine, and Danielle Roney, each with extensive experience in creating art works for public places. Friday’s events will include a discussion on planned design and community development by Lyn Menne, director of development for the City of Decatur; a session in creating handmade books with Judy Lynn; more discussion about his work with Alan Messer; and some sneak peeks at preliminary Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Decatur Book Festival activities.
Breather immediately precedes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Decatur
Book Festival taking place in Decatur during the same weekend (August 31
–September 2, 2007.) Information on the full activities of the Festival can be
found at decaturbookfestival.com.
Sponsors for Breather include the Georgia chapter of the Iconologic; Agnes Scott College; Lightroom Studios; Davis-Moye & Associates; Decatur Arts Alliance; Lenz Inc.; and Standard Deluxe.
Breather will provide an opportunity to foster public awareness of the
benefits of good design in public spaces and encourage strategies for design
as an indispensable element of a sustainable world.
