Ramon Canet exhibits at Michael Dunev Art Projects, Torroella de Montgri.
Ramon Canet (Mallorca, 1950), one of the most important painters of the Balearic Islands shows for the
first time in the area of Girona with an exhibition of recent paintings, created after his triumphant tour,
organised by the Caixa d'Estalvis del Mediterrani (CAM), where he presented an extensive body of work
from recent years at museums in Ibiza, Menorca, Mallorca, Murcia, Barcelona (Palau Moja) amongst
others.
Characterised by their structural geometry and their exhuberant expressionist gesture, the paintings of
Ramón Canet are closely connected to the Mallorcan Joan Miró as to the abstract tradition of the New
York School or the Paris Informalists, evoking Motherwell’s Elegies as much as the work of Soulages,
Fautrier or Michaud. With a reduced chromatic scale, Canet creates simple compositions where the
strength and personality of the gesture evoke both a conceptual unity and a deep spirituality.
The Nobel Laureate Carlos Fuentes, in his introduction to the CAM exhibition catalogue argues that
“the beauty of Canet’s paintings is that they are capable of moving. They become time itself. And they
are immortal inasmuch as they are able to move in time itself without any immortal pretentiousness.”
Ramón Canet has a long and solid exhibition record of significant international prestige. His exhibitions
have been seen in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Hamburg, Berlin, Stockholm, New York or
Djakarta. He has also participated in international art fairs, including Madrid, Paris, Hong Kong, Miami or
Turin.
