"Pieces of Eight: A Unique Group of Photomedia Practitioners"
2007-08-16 until 2007-08-28
Australian Center for Photography
Paddington, NS,
AU
Pieces of Eight marks the first time a creative team of staff members
from the Australian Centre for Photography have exhibited together in
over ten years. Diverse in their ideas, processes and experience – while united by a common fervour for photography – each of the exhibiting
photographers bring a fresh, individual approach to the medium. “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to exhibit together after working
so closely day to day” says Bec Dean, “we’re all at different stages in
our career and it’s nice to be able to create an exhibition that is
interesting and relevant artistically, while also being supportive to
each individual’s practice”.
Dean explores complex connections between personal, cultural and
cinematic/literary narratives in her self portraits; Furno turns her lens
to the urban environment with long exposures exploring a balance of
colour, shape, texture and pattern; Ibanez, a seasoned documenter of
the Sydney club scene, applies his eye for the instantaneous to the
contemporary quotidian; Knight uncovers the mechanics of the
timepiece - photographing watch parts to produce pensive and
commanding images; Luscombe blurs the boundaries between
artistic and commercial imagery as he traverses fashion and the
surreal; Momtazi relaunches her photographic practice with her series
Beginnings, revealing a fascination with nature’s talent for design;
Somerville contemplates loss and fragmentation, drawing together
the faded facades of what is remembered and what is left behind; and
Watkins combines familiar and foreign objects with near and distant
landscapes to recall personal souvenirs and sentimental voyages.
