Modernism in Latin America began in the 1920's, during a time of social and political turmoil. Many intellectuals and artists traveled to the Old World, and although they were influenced by what they saw, these artists wanted to assert their countries identities and express their own artistic vision. Over the decades what evolved were works of art imprinted with each regions social and political ideals and native and folkloric themes, blended with strong European elements from Impressionism to Surrealism. The breadth of Opera Gallery's Latin American collection includes master painters and sculptors who have achieved international stature along with contemporary and emerging artists - all are featured in this "vasta exposición" .
Wilfredo Lam, considered to be one of the most important Cuban modernists, was a friend of Picasso's. Lam's unique style is often described as a confluence of Cubism, Surrealism and Primitive art. Legendary in today's art world is Columbian-born Fernando Botero, whose paintings of corpulent men and women are the essence of his work. Post-modern artist Antonio Segui uses wit and humor in his paintings to interpret man's role in contemporary urban life, while Uruguayan artist Diego Masi challenges the optical effects of black and white in his abstract compositions. The boldness in the work of Chilean Surrealist Roberto Matta is in stark contrast to the chromatic tonalities used in Ruben Berland's mystical landscapes. Three-dimensional pieces in the exhibit include the undulating sculptures by Margarita Ferra and the powerful mixed-media constructions of Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi.
