A powerful series of organic, visceral paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour, plus mixed media assemblages by Linda Joyce Ott explore issues involving expectations, wild hopes and shattered dreams. The title of the exhibition "Yesterday's Perfume" comes from an unconventional memoir of writer Paul Bowles who peered deeply into the hearts and souls of men and women exposed to extreme environments and issues that forced them to confront the very nature of their being. Linda Joyce Ott has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2006.
In these bittersweet works, Ott evokes sensual mysterious forms and textures that inform and create an ethereal mood of wistful melancholy, nostalgic yearnings and contemplative perceptions of time that cut directly to the pulsating core of the human condition.
The assemblages in the exhibition contain life shards - bits and pieces of intimate ephemera - that the artist has collected over the years, along with her photographs, prints and writings. These offer the scent of an organic communal memory that prevails despite the eternal flux of life.
Ott's exhibition, entitled "The Earth Is Full of Anger", inaugurated the VAO Gallery in September 2006. The VAO Gallery is located at 1153A Queen Street West, Toronto. Hours: Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday noon to 5 p.m.
