"The Odyssey Within: An Exhibition of Fine Art from Italian and Greek Artists"
2007-12-14 until 2008-01-03
New York, NY,
USA United States of America
On view at the Agora Gallery in New York from December 14, 2007 to January 03, 2008, The Odyssey Within is a captivating survey of modern-day artists from Greece and Italy. The artistic conceptions vary dramatically while retaining a distinctive European character attentive to the human condition. Works of both quiet introspection and visual bravado are included, offering a unique look into the contemporary art coming from these two prominent Mediterranean locales. Among the artists participating in the exhibition is Greek artist Melanie Prapopoulos who has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2006.
The vivacious paintings by Melanie Prapopoulos occupy the fine line between representational and pure abstraction. Bold brushwork of vibrant color and sweeping, painterly gestures are the fundamental elements that transform the abstract into figurative. The theatrical quality of light and the graceful movements of the human form in dance have been greatly influential to her style. Additionally, her palette and linework allude to a narrative while leaving much of the interpretation to her audience.
The aesthetic choices mirror her artistic intent perfectly, “I believe that an artist has something to say or to point out” she explains, “An artist is a guide.” She was born in England and raised in the United States, earning her Bachelor’s Degree from New York University and her Master’s from the University of Indianapolis, before going on to teach literature and art history. Currently residing in Greece, Melanie Prapopoulos’ work has been exhibited in Greece, Turkey, Berlin, China, Italy and the United States.
Also included in the exhibition is Ece Abay, Sophia Angelis, Enzo Casale, Stefano Cattai, Antonis Choudalakis, Panos Evangelopoulos, Alessandro Fabriani, Tatiana Ferahian, Raffaele Gatta, Raffaele Gerardi, Dr. George Koemtzopoulos, Cesare Landini, Mario Gabriele Marioli, Monica Marioni, Aurora Mazzoldi, Angela Policastro, Giannis Stratis, Alexis Vlahos, and Anna Maria Zoppis.
