"Brent Meistre: Class_____"
2008-02-07 until 2008-03-01
Photographers Gallery ZA
Cape Town, ,
ZA South Africa
The Photographers Gallery za is proud to host a solo exhibition by award winning Eastern Cape photographer, Brent Meistre. Class____ approaches the city as a text to be edited. Attempting to form a narrative, the flow of which is arrested, as words are cut up and spaces, are cropped, free associations between and across the images and words are created. The process of attempting to edit the city, to gain control of the flow of signage/advertising, to use and exposes the framing of the viewfinder as a means of power and control, the viewfinder as a place of transgression and manipulation.
Meistre playfully probes the accepted teaching and reception of words, and words in relation to images. At the same time, because of the way the images are appropriated and re-contextualised, the slippages between the signifier and signified, and the play of meanings are brought to the fore.
Meistre is a photographer and academic living and working in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. Meistre has participated in numerous exhibitions and was nominated for the prestigious Daimler Chrysler Award for Creative Photography in 2003.
Metaphor is the key to Meistre's work and nothing is as simple as it first appears which gives the work density and meaning.
