"Lynton Wells: New Small Paintings"

The Rebecca Ibel Gallery is excited to present a new series of small paintings by New York artist Lynton Wells. The show opens Saturday, March 15 and runs through April 30, 2008. Smart and beautiful, witty and sexy, Well's paintings tease the mind and eyes. His images are energized and glow from within with a pure bright light. The bonsai tree has light bulbs for leaves and is literally plugged in; the angelic putti hover above a question mark, with an arm offering an apple; and a delightful frog frolics in his own charged space. These suggestive images conjure up all sorts of references from the ancient poets to contemporary music. Wells plays with ideas and subjects to suggest cultural connections of things all around us, big and small, and how we relate to them.
Wells' paintings have gained the attention of critics such as Dave Hickey who described Wells as "a surprising artist -- one of the best artists in that richer, alternate world." He has exhibited extensively in the US and abroad with over 150 group and solo shows since 1970, and has work in numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Dallas Museum of Art. Wells has been represented by the Rebecca Ibel Gallery since 1996.
Rebecca Ibel Gallery features paintings, photographs, sculpture and work on paper by contemporary artists. The Miranova Gallery is located at 2 Miranova Place, Suite 150 and is open Tuesday through Friday 11-5 and by appointment. The Rebecca Ibel Gallery also maintains a gallery in the Short North at 1055 North High Street and is open Wednesday - Saturdays 11-5 and by appointment.
