"Shelley Niro: almost fallen"
2008-03-29 until 2008-05-04
Cambridge Galleries
Cambridge, ON,
CA Canada
Almost Fallen at Cambridge Galleries collects several photo series by the Brantford, Ontario based artist, Shelley Niro, including a new sequence of images "La pieta", and several recent videos such as "Tree", which draws upon historical parallels between native identity and the Canadian landscape. Niro's work addresses mediated perceptions of First Nations' identity and the artist appropriates media constructed stereotypes of the 'Indian' to question our assumptions and expectations. The artist uses her artmaking as a means of communicating dignity, humanity and humour.
Shelley Niro is a member of the Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk from the Six Nations Reserve. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, Niro received her MFA from the University of Western Ontario. Her work has been broadly exhibited in galleries across Canada and can be found in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Her award-winning films have been screened in festivals worldwide. Her video The Shirt was presented at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Shelley Niro lives in Brantford, Ontario.
This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Urban Shaman in Winnipeg, and will also feature the launch of a shared co-publication.
Cambridge Galleries exhibitions are free and open to the public.
