In early January, 2008, SITE Santa Fe hosted a high energy, international, artistic think tank convened to prepare for the Seventh International Biennial. For one week in early January, SITE invited artists and curators from 16 countries to town--most coming to the US for the first time ever--for a total immersion course in all things Santa Fe. From this meeting LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN is unveiled - newly commissioned works by 25 emerging artists from 16 countries in SITE's building as well as in off-site locations around Santa Fe.
Together with the curator, Lance M. Fung, the artists and curators visited many different historical and cultural locations, met SITE staff, board and community members, saw the exhibition design by architects Tod Williams + Billie Tsien, determined sites for each commission, and then returned home to formulate their ideas and proposals. Their Santa Fe visit was chronicled by Jori Finkel in the New York Timeson Sunday, January 27, 2008
In June, they all returned to Santa Fe to build their works for the opening June 20-22, 2008, with the help of a team of artist volunteers, and several dozen student interns from around the world.
Together with Mr. Fung, the partner institutions and the curatorial team are planning a project with several singular attributes: 1) all emerging artists, 2) all will be making new commissions, 3) all site-specific, and 4) all of the works will be temporary, existing only until the end of the exhibition with many of the materials expected to be recycled back into the community.
SITE's Seventh International Biennial exhibition, LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN, is curated by Lance M. Fung, and will run from June 22-October 26, 2008.
