HANG ART announces In Season, a solo show of new paintings by Tjasa Owen, on display from July 1 through July 31, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Second Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 6-8pm at 556 Sutter St, San Francisco. Owen's work is inspired by the coastlines of the Atlantic and Pacific as well as travels abroad. The artist reassembles the elements of remembered scenes in order to create vivid landscapes that can be adopted and shared. The artist employs acrylic, oil pastel as well as collage media in her canvases, utilizing vintage stamps and postage markings. Owen likens her process to 'conjuring a landscape postcard… reproducing it on canvas, and, by adding an ink stamp, sending it back into the world.' The notion of travel is central to her work; besides representing landscapes blended from the artist's imagination, the paintings look as though the viewer is actually speeding past them.
Owen imbues her scenes of rural tranquility with dynamic motion—trees and grasses blow in the wind and clouds seem to race overhead. Her subtle textual notations on many of the pieces invite the viewer to create a personal relationship with the painting, and allow a range of personal interpretations.
Owen has studied fine arts, art history, and interior architecture on both American coasts and abroad. She attended and received her BA at the University of Virginia and studied at the National Academy of Art in New York, the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Coupa in Paris. Her work has been shown extensively in the US and internationally and has been acquired by many corporate collections as well as by a distinguished list of private collectors. Currently Tjasa lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children, Finn & Remy. In Season marks Owen's eighth show with HANG ART.
HANG ART is located at 556 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. For further information or high resolution images, please call 415 434 4264.
