Indian Artist, Kurchi Dasgupta from Calcutta will be showing a series of unique oil paintings on classic films from around the world, that are both evocative and surreal in nature. She covers a wide repertoire of films in her work including, Kurosawa’s Raan, Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and works of Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange), Bergman (Hour of the Wolf), Tarkovsky (Stalker), Ghatak (Komal Gandhar), Truffaut (400 Blows) and Woody Allen (Love and Death). Sixteen masters of cinema are represented – almost drawing a map of ground-breaking world cinema of the 20th century. Kurchi Dasgupta has been a Free Portfolio member at absolutearts.com since 2006.
Kurchi’s work aims in bringing the two disparate, yet similar, worlds of film and painting together and represent her visual dialogue with films that have had a profound influence on cultures from around the world.
'Kurchi Dasgupta is one of the more interesting young artists at work in India today. Her use of oil - combining swirling decorative textures, promptings from the subconscious, and politics - is particularly fascinating.' – Amit Chaudhuri, (writer, critic)
