Karim Francis Gallery is pleased to announce its first exhibition of works by the late Hamed Abdalla. Entitled "Hamed Abdalla 1917-1985: Selected Works", the solo exhibition is on display Janauary 25 through March 26, 2009 in Cairo.
Bringing together approximately forty works made between 1953 and 1975, some of which are being shown to the public for the first time, the exhibition presents a selection from Abdalla's remarkable fifty-year career, giving viewers the chance to examine the myriad intellectual and cultural influences informing his oeuvre.
The pioneering Egyptian artist, who was born in Cairo in 1917 and died in Paris in 1985, left behind an important legacy with his raw scrutiny and distinct visual language. His bold, minimalist abstractions, populated with lyrical forms, anthropomorphised letters and glowing colours - visually arresting in their depth, fluidity and mystery - establish him as one of the region's greatest modern painters.
The contemporary art scene in Egypt draws upon a unique body of pictorial and sculptural traditions while incorporating a variety of new mediums, including video art, sound and sculpture installation. This new diversity of mediums allows Egyptian artists to express their traditional roots along with their contemporary realities and world-at-large. In turn, a new sense of artistic and cultural identity is emerging from the Egyptian art world.
In 1995, to fill the gap in the contemporary art scene in Egypt, Karim Francis Art Gallery was opened. Located within a pedestrian area of downtown Cairo, Karim Francis Art Gallery is a unique venue where more than 150 paintings and sculptures are exhibited.
