With a studio based in Cobargo, NSW, Gabrielle Powell explores the traditions of basketry while incorporating contemporary techniques. She creates original baskets by combining different textures and colours of found and manufactured materials. Opening 6pm Thursday 26 March, Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre presents new work by Gabrielle Powell. The exhibition continues until Saturday 2 May 2009 in the Crucible Showcases. Craft ACT is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 12noon to 4pm.
Gathering materials, such as natural fibres including cord line and laminar, as well as man-made items including whipper snipper cord, fabric, phone wire and computer cables, each basket has a story and is an experiment with technique and shape. A self taught basket maker, Powell is inspired by traditional techniques found in Australian Indigenous, African and American Indian baskets.
