Deveron Arts welcome China's 'The Utopia Group' for Summer residency
Palace of Puzzles celebratory events to take place on Saturday 26th September
He Hai & Deng Dafei - the Utopia Group
East meets West - the heritage of James Legge
'Palace of Puzzles' Celebration event this weekend
Residency - July – September 2009
The Utopia Group (Deng Dafei and He Hai) from China will unearth the
legacy of James Legge (1815-1897), Huntly born Sinologist and
translator of major works (Confucius, I Ching, Chinese Classics) into
English from Mandarin.
Huntly is the place of James Legge's childhood. He lived in a wee house
at the Square (corner of Duke Street) which was later replaced by the
house you can see on the Square (Peterkin's Agency). Deveron Arts has
now rented the first and second floor of the house. Please give us a
quick ring if you like to visit the premises.
During his life time James Legge came back to visit Hunlty and his
family from his various travels to China. In 1840 the trainline from
Aberdeen to Inverness was built which made it much easier for Legge to
return to Huntly. At one time Legge returned with three Chinese
students who were christened in Huntly and went to school here. At the
time Legge preached at the Congregational Church which is now the
Sinclair Bakery on Old Road.
The Utopia Group from Beijing have developed a methodology based on the
idea of ‘seeking the subject’. Focusing on themes of community,
historical and cultural landscape, they use the context of a residency
to investigate and express their cultural understanding.
