LORI LEJEUNE: GAMES AND CONSTRUCTED
REALITY
now through December 7
"Lori Lejeune's use of 3-D and animation software to generate
photographs of cosmic chessboards that never existed outside of the
computer demonstrates remarkable ingenuity and competence in new
media. Her comparison of this digital construction to the way the mind
generates its perception of the outer world and the way that shared
fictions generate social reality are encoded in her use of the
standard cultural trope of chess as metaphor for the game of
life." -- Dr. Jerry Cullum, noted art critic
Lori
Lejeune's unconventional, other-worldly chess constructs challenge
the traditional definition of a photograph. Her work is almost
entirely a construction as the photograph is created by
computer-generating a three-dimensional scene in a time-consuming
process that can be thought of as a combination of sculpture and
photography. Although not a chess player herself, her chess images are
thoughtful inventions that offer metaphors for rules, regimentation
and playfulness. They tell stories of everyday choices and challenges,
victories and defeat in the game of life. Several of the titles refer
to named situations in chess, such as "Bad Bishop," when the
bishop is likely to be a liability, and "Zugzwang," when any
move available to you worsens your position. "Nearly
Surrounded" is a piece where the central character has one avenue
of escape. Both of the "Endgame" pieces refer to the names
of final positions in chess where the game can be won, or at least not
lost, if you play your game carefully. With chess, she highlights
scenarios in the game of life. Lori Lejeune's photographic
constructions often place things outside of familiar and common
contexts as a means of drawing attention to this underlying
significance.
The work
of Lori Lejeune reflects current times, pushing boundaries of the
photographic medium while offering unexpected visions that open doors
to reflection and musing. With invented realities, she presents
photographic fictions that delve for deeper truths.
