Dear Geometry: Anissa Mack, Nate Boyce, Rick Caruso

An exhibit arranged by Bill Jenkins.
October 20 – November 24, 2012
Opening Saturday, October 20th, 6-9pm

Jancar Jones Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit arranged by New York-based artist Bill Jenkins.  The show will include three pieces by three artists; Anissa Mack, Nate Boyce, and Rick Caruso that consider geometric forms as mediated by context, process of construction, and visuality.

At the turn of the twentieth century, within the visual arts, mimeses began to be superseded and abstracted, ultimately producing an interest in the use of non-representational geometric form.  Over time, dreams of uncovering the essence of these forms came and went.  As social and physical context became increasingly important as a means to make and see art, geometry was returned to a representational role.  Now looking at objects that display angular enclosed forms, singular or repeated, in and out of patterns it’s hard not to be aware of the wider web of connections and circumstances that condition them.

The artists in this show study these shifts through works that incorporate both the social and the material contexts of geometric abstract forms.  Each of the works in their own way remember when geometry could be declared pure form, but don’t look back through any one clear frame.  The memory becomes an evolving version of itself as the recollection has been reprogrammed, reimagined, and reprocessed over time.  Through the layering of histories, materials, and methods of representation, the three works tunnel through generations of geometric form and display the mediations and interferences they acquire along the way.
