Nikki Forrest est une artiste montréalaise dont la pratique inclut la vidéo, l'installation et des projets de dessin. Son travail récent explore des idées à propos de la phénoménologie et de la perception des rapports entre la gravité et l'ampleur.

En utilisant des approches qui s'appuient sur les aspects du surréalisme et de l'abstraction, FLIP / BEND propose des situations où il est possible d'entrevoir la perception dans l'action à l’intérieur d’une atmosphère qui est à la fois familière et troublante.

Nous vivons dans un moment où les idées préconçues et les systèmes de croyances du passé n'ont plus aucun sens. La réalité est sans cesse innovante et remarquable, mais autant de possibilités destructives qu’inventives ou encore de transformation et de mutation nous entourent. Mon travail tente d'évoquer ce sentiment d'instabilité à travers un processus s’ancrant dans le matériel et qui combine la chance et l'intention de produire des résultats qui ne sont jamais tout à fait prévisibles.

Travaillant avec des approches qui s'appuient sur le surréalisme et l'abstraction, les deux vidéos suggèrent un sentiment de malaise ou d'appréhension ainsi qu’une certaine esthétique formelle. Tous les deux tentent de créer des situations où il est possible d'entrevoir la perception dans  l'action, oscillant entre savoir et non-savoir.

Mon espoir avec ces vidéos réside dans la création de boucles de perception qui déstabilisent le spectateur dans ses certitudes au sujet de ce qu’il voit.

La Centrale est fière de coprésenter cette exposition avec Le Festival HTMLLES 10.

Nikki Forrest is a Montreal based artist whose practice includes video, installation and drawing projects. Her recent work explores ideas about phenomenology and perception in relation gravity and scale.

Using approaches that draw on aspects of surrealism and abstraction, FLIP / BEND proposes situations where it’s possible to glimpse perception in action within an atmosphere that is simultaneously familiar and unsettling.

We live in a moment when fixed ideas and belief systems of the past no longer make sense. Reality is continuously being innovated and remarkable as well as destructive possibilities for invention, transformation and mutation surround us. My work attempts to evoke this sense of instability through a materially based process that combines chance and intention to produce results that are never entirely foreseeable.

The installation at La Centrale is rooted in a fascination with certain aspects of phenomenology and perception, which interest me in relation to how we construct knowledge and our sense of reality. Working with approaches that draw on surrealism and abstraction, the videos suggest a sense of uneasiness or apprehension.  As well as a kind of formal aesthetic, both attempt to create situations where it’s possible to glimpse perception in action, oscillating between knowing and un-knowing.

My hope is that the videos create perceptual loops that destabilize the viewer’s sense of certainty about what is being seen.

Fondée en 1973 et issue des mouvements féministes, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse est un des plus anciens centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec. La galerie s’est donnée pour mandat de développer les pratiques artistiques féministes et de soutenir la visibilité d’artistes et d’initiatives moins ou peu représentées auprès des institutions culturelles établies. Le centre encourage les artistes à toutes les étapes de leur carrière afin de favoriser les échanges intergénérationnels.

Le centre a pour objectif d’offrir une plateforme pour les langages en art actuel portés par les discours féministes, les théories du genre, la diversité culturelle et la transdisciplinarité. Nous accueillons des propositions pour des projets d'expositions et de performances qui répondent à ces théma- tiques.

Forte de sa longue expérience et riche d’une programmation audacieuse en performance, le centre lance cet appel de dossiers aux artistes en art action et performance à l’occasion des activités qui marqueront le 40ème anniversaire de la Centrale débutant en 2013 et culminant en 2014.

Le volet performance sera intégré dans le cadre de la programmation de La Centrale et également durant le Festival VIVA !art action à l’automne 2013. Une attention particulière sera portée aux propositions de performances ayant attrait au matrimoine artistique féministe, à l'histoire de cette pratique et son dialogue avec les pratiques performatives actuelles. L’appel est ouvert aux artistes à l'échelle locale, nationale, et internationale.

La sélection des propositions est effectuée par le comité de performance. Les réponses seront envoyées par la poste ou par courriel dans un délai de 3 mois après la date de tombée.

Founded in 1973, and having emerged from the feminist art movement, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse is one of the oldest artist-run centers in Quebec. Our mandate expands on a history of feminist art practices. La Centrale welcomes proposals from artists who may be underrepresented within established art institutions. As the center also aims to encourage intergenerational dialogue, we work with artists at all stages of their careers.

The centre's objective is to provide a platform for contemporary art in dialogue with feminist thought, gender theory, as well as intercultural and transdisciplinary practices.  We invite proposals for performance projects that respond to these aims.

With its strong history of programming groundbreaking performance , la Centrale is launching this call for artists working in performance and action art to complement the activities that will mark the centre's 40th anniversary. Beginning in 2013 and culminating in 2014, the performance component will be integrated into the framework of la Central's programming as well as during VIVA! art action Festival in the fall 2013. Particular attention will be given to performance proposals that appeal to a matrilineal, feminist artistic approach, to the history of this practice and to its dialogue with current performative practices.

The call is open to local, national and international artists. The selection of proposals will be carried out by the Performance Committee. Results will be sent by post or email within 3 months after the deadline.
