SOO SUNNY PARK EXHIBITS

“SSVT (South Strafford, Vermont) Vapor Slide”

at CRANBROOK ART MUSEUM, MICHIGAN

Cynthia-Reeves is pleased to announce the installation of SSVT (South Strafford, Vermont) Vapor Slide, a complex and beautiful site-based installation by Soo Sunny Park, in the Wainger Gallery at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Recently shown at Fabrications (Newport, NH), an exhibition curated by CYNTHIA-REEVES, SSVT will remain on view at Cranbrook through March 17, 2013.

Park’s large-scale installation, SSVT (South Strafford, Vermont) Vapor Slide (2007), is a monumental work that achieves both an ethereal presence and the sense of an integrated environment. Made of quotidian materials—chain link fence, plastic cups, paper clips, and river rocks—Park brings these seemingly innocuous materials together in an unexpected and imaginative way, crafting a dazzling environment of diffused light, suspended canopies, and a rhythmic patterning of light and dark.

At once rigorously structured and impossibly fragile, the work transforms the space of the gallery into a subtly shifting perceptual experience that is visceral, tactile, and, surprisingly, emotional. The use of chain link fence, a conventional boundary demarcation, is employed here to create an inviting space, rather than being used as a means to impede access. In so doing, SSVT (South Strafford, Vermont) Vapor Slide becomes a spellbinding meditation on the interstitial spaces we encounter every day and the myriad possibilities hidden within.

The artist created the work in response to the undulating, snowy hills of South Strafford, Vermont – a new landscape given her childhood in Korea and in the south. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she moved to the United States of the age of eleven and grew up in Georgia and Florida. Park is a 2000 alumna of Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Sculpture Department, and is now a tenured professor at the Studio Art Department of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Before studying at Cranbrook, she received her BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. The artist has been exhibiting with CYNTHIA-REEVES since 2008.

Soo Sunny Park is currently preparing for a retrospective that will open at Rice University in Houston, Texas in April 2013, immediately after her installation closes at Cranbrook. The signature work included in the Rice University exhibition, Capturing Resonance, is traveling from the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where Park collaborated with sound artist Spencer Topel. This same installation was just on view at Art Miami as a public art project under the auspices of Cynthia-Reeves, December 2 – 6, 2012, as part of the Art Basel fair week. The installation receives the natural and artificial light, and transmits a prismatic array of color through its discreet 'cells' of iridescent diachroic acrylic. At the fair, the artwork was centrally located above the VIP area at Art Miami. The installation received critical acclaim from reviewers and from the general public.
