The Photographs of Ray K. Metzker and the Institute of Design

Laurence Miller will present a selection of important prints and composites by Ray K. Metzker, including his majestic "Car and Street Lamp." First conceived in 1966, Metzker later began a limited edition of 20 composites printed from the original negatives. Only nine were made, and all sold, with #9 entering the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington. "Car and Street Lamp" #8 has now become available for sale.

Further highlights will include:

Burk Uzzle's famous 1969 Woodstock photographs, including the Ercolines wrapped in a blanket in the early morning haze, which many of you will recognize as the cover of your Woodstock vinyl.

Helen Levitt's 1980 classic of a contorted girl at the curb, nicknamed Spider Girl, will also be featured, along with rare vintage black and white prints.

CPLA marks the American debut of Kazuo Sumida's Tosa Late Night Diary and Uncle, an exotic and mysterious series taken in the early 1980's with infrared film in and around a gay bar in which Sumida discovered his uncle was a performer. An exhibition will open in February at Laurence Miller Gallery.

Fred Herzog made color slides beginning in the mid-1950's, and we are only now, through modern printmaking technology, able to appreciate his extraordinary and ground breaking work in color.
