Art News:
Art Stage Singapore partners with architectural firm WY-TO to create unique spatial experience for 2013 fair
|
|
Inspired by the textile industry of Southeast Asia, Yann Follain, co-founder of WY-TO, has designed a Floating Skeleton to greet the fairâs visitors. The wire-framed floating structure will act as a gateway to Asiaâs global art fair. Representing Follainâs take on a traditional textile loom from which cloth is woven, the structureâs meticulous lines represent the diverse techniques and patterns of Southeast Asian textiles. The lines also reinforce the thread that connects people and civilizations through time. The Skeleton is a sculpture in motion, providing a different perspective from every angle.

The oversized loom theme follows through into the new VIP area â The Whirl. Follain has deliberately used lines (representing thread), colour, light and textures to represent the diverse and differentiating cultural influences on the established textile industry of Southeast Asia, to create a series of enclaves for established collectors to experience an increased sense of privacy while visiting the exhibition. âThe Whirlâ has been created to evoke the feeling of something ancient, between Art and Craftsmanship.

Singapore, the centre of Asian creativity

âBoth areas are reflective of the crossroads between East and West, which perfectly represents what both WY-TO and Singapore culture are all about,â comments Yann Follain, co-founder of WY-TO. âAt Art Stage Singapore 2013, this is portrayed through our influences from the abstract art movement and Southeast Asian Craftsmanshipâ, added Follain.
Follainâs vision will be realised by event conceptualisation and production house Kingsmen, a key partner to Art Stage since the fairâs inception. Anthony Chong, Managing Director of Kingsmen comments, âAs a homegrown company founded on design and quality, we are committed to the advancement of creativity and innovation. Our participation in Art Stage is a manifestation of our support and commitment towards Singaporeâs growing position as Asiaâs hub for contemporary art.
Lorenzo Rudolf, founder and Fair Director of Art Stage Singapore adds, âWith every edition of Art Stage we set out to create more than just an exhibition; creating a museum of contemporary art. This year we have extended the concept even further by incorporating innovative architectural elements to provide an all encompassing holistic experience for customers matching architectural elements in the fairground, with innovative and quality art, in one of Singaporeâs most iconic buildings.
âThe Floating Skeletonâ and âThe Whirlâ can be experienced at Art Stage Singapore 2013, held from 24 -27 Jan 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.
