Breakwell, Ian
IAN BREAKWELL
London: Angela Flowers, 1971
21 x 20.8cm, 4pp. Exhibition catalogue with two images of works by the
conceptual artist - this exhibition was the important show where
Breakwell's and Mike Leggett's 'One' film was made. The film "documents a
performance by Breakwell at the Angela Flowers Gallery on 10th February
1971, celebrating the gallery's first anniversary. The performance was
filmed with Leggett on 16mm film and digitally reconstructed by him in
2003. The event coincided with the Apollo 14, third manned mission to the
moon. Throughout an eight-hour 'working day', a group of labourers shovel
dirt in a room on the second floor of the gallery. Each labourer stands
before his own pile of dirt and work begins, shovelling from one pile to
the next in a continuous circle. The activity was simultaneously broadcast
via CCTV to a monitor in the gallery's street level window. As the day went
on and the original piles merged into a layer of mud on the gallery floor,
the live footage struck a striking resemblance to that being fed back from
the moon, drawing the attention, and confusion, of several passers by. Over
the footage, is a soundtrack spoken by Breakwell, in which he takes each
part in a conversation about different kinds of employment, drawing a
parallel between the quotidian, and futile labour in the gallery and the
seemingly more glamorous and extraordinary labour on the moon. At the end
of the day's activity, the workers stop to rest, exhausted, and celebrate
the birthday with cake and a song." (Lengthy quote taken from the FTI-Io
website). A scarce documentation in VG condition.

Christo
5600 CUBICMETER PACKAGE
Baierbrunn : Verlag Wort und Bild, 1968
29 x 20.5cm, unpaginated. card covers. B/w photographs by Klaus Baum and
Thomas Cugini along with drawings and architectural sketches. The
documentation of the title event at Documenta 1968 where Christo and
Jeanne-Claude created "the largest ever inflated structure not to be
supported by a skeleton. After three unsuccessful attempts, it was erected
on August 3, 1968, with the assistance of five cranes, two of which were
230 feet (70 meters) high and weighed 200 tons each. The pair of giant
cranes, the tallest Europe had to offer, had been operating separately in
northern France and in Hamburg, Germany. It took two weeks just to make
arrangements for both cranes to arrive simultaneously in Kassel, to elevate
the inflated air package from its horizontal position on the ground to its
vertical position. The 7 ton air package consisted of an envelope made of
21,528 square feet (2,000 square meters) of Trevira fabric coated with PVC
and tied with ropes. The heat-sealed fabric envelope was restrained by a
net made of 11,482 feet (3,500 meters) of rope specially prepared by
professional riggers and secured by 1,200 knots. The elevation took 9
hours. Once elevated, the 5,600 Cubicmeter Package stood 280 feet (85
meters) tall, with a diameter of 32.8 feet (10 meters). Chief engineer
Dimiter Zagoroff designed a three-and-a-half ton, 36-foot (11-meter)
diameter steel cradle-like base to support the air package 36 feet (11
meters) above the ground. The steel cradle was hinged on a central steel
column anchored in a one-ton concrete foundation. Air pressure was
maintained by a centrifugal blower run by a variable-speed electric motor.
A gasoline generator stood by in case of power failure. To keep the air
package in its vertical position, steel guy wires were anchored to 12
embedded concrete foundations, six 10-ton and six 18-ton, which were
completely removed when the air package was taken down three months later."

RETURN TO SQUARE 1967/68 (FROM 'CYBERNETIC SERENDIPITY')
London: ICA/Motif Editions, n.d. (1970)
68 x 40cm. B/w offset displaying one of the earliest computer generated
graphics specially created for this ICA break-through show. The computer
first formed a human profile (moving from a square initial graphic) and
then moved outwards to reflect the profile of the "face" ten times before
ending in a further "square". Handling creases, one dog ear top right a
tape adhesion (faint but noticeable) top left and a 2 x 1cm paper lack
bottom right but an important document from the first years of
human-computer aesthetic interaction (which errs on the side of humanity
but their time will no doubt come). This is a very scarce item.

Devon: The Beau Geste Press, 1973
22.5 x 35cm. Printed folder content of c. 50+ variously formatted posters,

assemblage journal originally intended as a supplement to the "Fluxshoe"
catalogue. Contributions by Eric Anderson, Carla Liss, Ian Breakwell,
Ehrenberg, Milan Knizak, Takako Saito, Chris Welch & many others. All
pieces fine in close to fine folder apart from the balloon (usually
missing) has perished and stuck the Saito offering (a leaflet) to the Davi
Det Homson score - that said this is the most extensive example of this
publication we have seen as often the elements contained within vary from
lazily assembled copy to copy - here for instance can be found an unique
collage with hand-written text, Carla Liss' page work, the fake US
hand-drawn dollar, the aforementioned perished balloon, Bob Watt's
reproduction of his Fluxstamps, Jock Reynolds' postcard and the unused
sheet of contrite poetry adhesive stickers, the transparent event sheet and
the sometimes missing Fluxshoe poster and so on and so on. Hence a scarce
extensive example of the publication.

PLEASE DO NOT MOVE OR DISLOCATE THESE TRUTHS/REAL CAMDEN ARTS FESTIVAL
London: Real Camden Arts Festival, 1972
32.5 x 10.5cm, 12pp plus (undersized) card covers. Mimeograph. Programme
for the alternative arts festival which outlived the official (somewhat
blander) Camden Arts Festival. There is a certain amount of gloating inside
these pages at the failure of the council-backed and, hence, better funded
event. Texts by Kelly on Mayakovsky and poems by Ulli McCarthy and Michael
McClure. Some slight yellowing to some pages and the oversize internal
pages have minor dog ends to the corners at the top of the publication
where the card has not protected them else VG. The design by the way is
very reminiscent to that of Jeff Nuttall's regular publications of that
time but there is no direct evidence of his involvement in this item.

Morris, Robert
SCULPTURE
LA: Dwan Gallery, 1966
Los Angeles: Dwan Gallery, 1966
55 x 71cm, offset on semi-opaque paper (drafting paper) with a minimal
design by the artist (overlapping triangles). This was one of Morris'
earliest shows (his first solo show was at the NY Green Gallery in 1963 but
he did not exhibit much there after that) and the year in which he really
came to prominence with articles in various art journals including
Artforum. Here Morris showed in the soon-to-be-closed LA base for the Dwan
which later moved (along with John Weber) to show only in New York. This is
a remarkably scarce item but is in poor condition and requires some
restoration as it is folded into eight panels (leaving creases on the
paper), has some further wear and tear around the edges including obvious
scuffs on the paper which is very susceptible to such damage and has had
some water damage in the past leaving a red ink stain (which could be
washed out) and rippling over the left hand side. That being said few
examples of this item survive and a good conservator could bring this back
to life (which is what it deserves). Priced thus.

A REMARKABLY EARLY UNIQUE WOLF VOSTELL PAINTING WITH CONCRETE TYPOGRAPHIC
ELEMENTS FROM HIS "PHASEN" PERIOD

Vostell, Wolf
UNTITLED (PHASEN). UNIQUE PAINTING (GOUACHE ON CARD) 1960.
23 x 23cm, black and gray and white gouache on thick card which has been
cut out and then glued on to a larger piece of card (42 x 297cm approx.)
and signed "Vostell 1960" in pencil bottom right. A remarkably early
painting from the master at a time when he was involved in the original
Decollage Movement and also creating artist's books which were related to
the emerging concrete poetry movement. This work - which has full and
traceable provenance - is very similar to those printed works he produced
in the same year which are entitled "Phasen" and involved the painted
repetition of words on top of each other to create a dark brooding mass of
shapes. The backing card has some very small creases but else this is in
very good condition. Unique but all such early works by Vostell are
extremely hard to find after 50 + years.

side. This photograph is hand-signed in black ink below the photograph and
is probably unique although we cannot guarantee that. Again full provenance
is available.

activities" works where he used images from his happenings to document them
in the form of very small edition prints - here this is one of ONLY 25
signed and numbered copies. A very intriguing and colourful image allows
one to note the cars used in his "KLEENEX 7 FLUXUS" happening. Signed and
numbered bottom right. Some minor wrinkling to the canvas from previous
handling and on the back of the canvas are some paper remnants from a
poster which has become attached in the past but this does not affect the
front of the work. This has been framed conservation ally and is in a wood

2 (11 = all  published, including double numbers).  Director:  Paul Keeler,
editor: David Medalla.
London:  Centre for Advanced Creative Study, Sept 1964
51 x 34cm, 16pp. Single number of this gallery newsbulletin (which
eventually became a de facto arts journal) often concentrating on kinetic -
optical art and the Zero group (No.1 was published as "Signalz").
Illustrated throughout with many articles, reviews and exhibition
information. At the beginning of the sixties, Asian artist Medalla helped
found the Centre for Advanced Creative Study in London (later renamed
Signals London) which was dedicated to experiments in art and science. The
Centre soon became the site for a series of large-scale shows of
experimental and kinetic art and published 11 numbers (including doubles)
of the periodical. Signals featured work by an international roster of
artists, including Takis (Greece), Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica (Brazil),
Jesus Rafael Soto and Alejandro Otero (Venezuela)  and Pablo Neruda (Chile)
- and later  significantly promoted the work of the Zero group from
Germany. Later Mandalla became an important artist in his own right with
large, kinetic bubble sculptures - this particular number has a double page
spread in the middle (with 6 b/w images) and a front page image of several
of these sculptures - elsewhere South American art and Robin Page are
featured. There are some condition issues here - because of the large
format size the journal has been folded none too carefully horizontally and
there is some browning along the spine. Sadly the outer sheet has one 4 x
2cm ragged paper loss which slightly affects the text of the editorial,
additionally the same sheet has some edge wear on the right, dog ears and
other closed folds can be also seen on this outer sheet - internally it is
much better. That said all copies are now scarce - priced accordingly.

his Magnetic Manifesto being published in full over a full page and a
double page centre-fold but texts by Burroughs, Jouffroy and Lebel on his
work. Even a quote by Marcel Duchamp on Takis is found. Folded for storage
