by Arlyn de Jesus, Beth Cheong, Don Low, Jenny Sim, Paul Koh and William Sim
Singapore 13 March 2013 – As part of its continuing effort to promote Singaporean artists, Arts To U Services is pleased to present a group exhibition entitled After the Summer of 1890 to be held at The East Garden Foyer of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, from 5th May 2013. A total of 30 paintings by six Singaporean artists and clients of Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) will be showcased. The Organiser and artists will donate part of the sales proceeds to the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH).
Exhibition Synopsis
Van Gogh, the renowned Dutch post-impressionist master needs no further introduction. Starry Night (1889) fills the air with a rhythmic sense of stillness; Sunflower (1888) explodes with energized colours leaving an eternal impression. In a short span of ten artistic years, van Gogh created thousands of paintings, touching almost everyone who has the opportunity to see. The exhibition will highlight artists Arlyn de Jesus, Beth Cheong, Don Low, Jenny Sim, Paul Koh and William Sim, who will revisit the masterpieces of van Gogh and narrate his works through their paintbrushes.
While it is debatable about how van Gogh’s mental state of health has affected his paintings, it is undeniable that he produced some of this greatest works during his stay at Saint Paul Asylum, Saint Remy, France. Starry Night (1889), Cypresses (1889), La Sieste (Meridienne) (1890), are just a few of these great works. Through the artists’ interpretation of van Gogh’s works, the Organiser and SAMH hope to draw attention and heighten the awareness for the mental well being and promote psychological wellness and mental health recovery through expressive artistic and creative therapies.
The money raised from the sale of the artists’ works will benefit SAMH’s various centers and services for individuals and families with psychiatric, psycho-social and other social or relationship problems.
